Since 1933 the Park Service has produced dimensioned drawings of 40,000 American structures, including barns, mills, springhouses and outbuildings. All of it public domain.

The Historic American Buildings Survey is the sleeper resource in this whole library.

Since 1933 the National Park Service has produced measured drawings of more than 40,000 historic American structures, held at the Library of Congress. Not artists’ impressions: dimensioned architectural drawings recording how the building was actually built, down to the joinery and the framing.

All of it is public domain. You may download, print, publish and mirror it freely.

Why this matters here specifically

These are the buildings people put up before dimensional lumber, power tools and manufactured trusses. Timber frame barns, springhouses, smokehouses, root cellars, corn cribs.

If the intention is to build with what grows on the land, using traditional joinery, HABS is a free archive of exactly how that was done, region by region. Nothing else free comes close.

Search tip: filter by state and by structure type. Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania are richly documented for barns.

The 1941 catalog

We host the survey’s own 1941 printed catalog, which indexes what had been recorded by then and is a useful way in.
