Wood is the honest answer on a wooded parcel

The fuel is on the land, the system survives a grid failure, and nothing has to be delivered. The cost is labour, every year, forever. That is a real cost and it should be counted rather than romanticised.

Four things matter more than which stove you buy.

Size to the envelope, not the square footage. An oversized stove in a tight building gets run smouldering, and smouldering is how chimneys catch fire. A well-sealed, well insulated house needs a much smaller stove than its floor area suggests.

A woodlot has to regrow faster than you burn it. A rough planning figure is that roughly an acre of managed hardwood sustains a household’s heating indefinitely in a temperate climate. Confirm it for your species and climate before relying on it, but it is enough to tell you whether ten acres is plenty or marginal.

Insurance and code care about the installation, not the stove. Clearances, hearth construction, chimney class, and inspection. An uninspected installation can void a policy, which is a bad thing to discover after a fire.

Rocket mass heaters burn far less wood by storing heat in mass. They are also essentially unpermittable as primary heat in most jurisdictions. Treat them as a workshop or greenhouse solution unless your county says otherwise in writing.

On ground-source heat pumps

These became substantially harder for owner-builders to fund after the 2025 residential clean energy credit repeal. Anything written before 2025 that recommends geothermal on cost grounds should be re-checked against current incentives before you believe its arithmetic.
